Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell.    We all appreciate the story of the young prodigy blossoming almost effortlessly into the irrepressible genius.  Well, all of us, it seems, except Malcolm Gladwell.  In this book, Gladwell draws on a variety of studies and entertaining anecdotes to dispel the notion that stars are born not made.  Well written and fun, the book covers the value of focused practicethe 10,000 hour rule.  He also sheds light on the importance of being in the right place at the right time, the impact of cultural influence and why, in the end, brain power alone won’t deliver success.  What does this have to do with the Beatles, Bill Gates and rice farming?  A superb storyteller, Gladwell answers these and many other questions.  Skeptics will point to some lack of scholarly rigor here, but there’s little doubt that readers will rethink their ideas of success after reading this book.
